Cartomancy - Hungarian playing cards

The Hungarian playing cards were very important in the childhood of many Hungarians.

Looking at the name of the cards, it is easy to associate it with Hungary, however, the playing cards were very popular in many countries of Central Europe, but the names are different in every country.

The deck which is known as “Magyar kártya” in Hungary differs from the standard deck, as it has only 32 cards, the suits are called: Acorns, Leaves (they sound like «zöld» which means «green), Hearts, and Bells (they sound like «tök» which means «pumpkin»). The symbols of the suits come from the German deck, which has been very popular since the beginning of the 15th century. The suits of the German deck have special meanings: hearts represent the priesthood, leaves represent citizens, acorns show peasantry, and bells represent noblemen. All of the playing cards have Roman numbers from VII to X and include under and upper Jacks, Kings, and Aces.

The four Kings represent anonymous heroes sitting on the horses. four Aces represent four seasons showing the well-known qualities of these seasons. The Jacks represent characters from the Swiss legend William Tell. Some figures on the cards don’t look similar to any heroes, so the choice to use these characters can’t be explained.

József Schneider is a creator of the Hungarian playing cards, he is known as a card painter and he made the first deck of playing cards in 1836 in Hungary during the revolution times against authorities in Europe. There is the possibility that he designed the Swiss freedom fighters because it was restricted to represent any Hungarian heroes, such things were censored.

This is one of my favorite playing cards with its impressive classic design.

As with all type of deck of cards, you can predict the future with this as well, the layout  can be similar to the gypsy card.

You can name the cards as it pleases you, but you have to be careful, as I have mentioned here before, once you made up your mind what to call them, you have to stick to that.

It can be useful for new diviners, as it’s easy to understand the meaning of the cards. The result will be objective, not as chatty as the Gypsy or  Lenormand card. We would rather rely on the meanings of the pages and the synonyms of the words and not to the symbols hidden on the card.

He doesn’t want a commitment, but he doesn’t let you go.

Apparently everything is fine with your partner, funny, attentive, respectable, only there is a problem. He doesn’t want to be in a committed relationship, and he has told you that. You keep thinking about your “title”,  who you are in this relationship.

But he is still looking for you, calls you, sends messages, plans the weekend programs with you. You even met his friends, family, but when you were introduced to them, you could hardly hear your “title” (did he say “girlfriend” or friend with benefits). The constant uncertainty is always there, and it this makes you even more confused because it obviously means something. Or not?

You want to be his partner and not his therapist and the first mistake that many people fall into, trying to save someone who is not asked to be saved.

Meaning of the cards:

HERMIT: The present. This card represents what is happening to the querent at the present time. It also reflects the querent’s state of mind and how they may perceive the situation.

Regarding her job, I see unhappiness. At the moment she needs a big change a fresh start, a new direction. At the moment her job only pays the bill but not challenging.

What I see you have a wish, a goal, and a plan. What bothers you, you don’t know how to get to your goal, and it blurs your vision. You feel you want something hard to reach, but that’s not true. You have the will and power to do it. Just have faith.

When should we go for a reading?

Is it okay to do one for ourselves? In general, do we feel we can accept what the cards may reveal?

There are times in our lives when we are anxiously awaiting a positive event to occur, or we have to make a decision, and are wondering what can be expected to come our way. There is only one thing more irritating and disheartening than getting a negative answer, and that is getting no answer at all from the cards. It can also be frustrating to find out that the situation in question is not likely to change, or at least not in the near future.

Generally folks go for a reading when trying to solve a problem or battling some dilemma, and are in a turbulent emotional state. During such times our clear judgement is impeded, and we have a tendency to extremes, to view things in an overly pessimistic or optimistic manner.

I often get asked if I do readings for myself. The answer is a definite “no”, because even the most disciplined reader may be inclined to interpret the layout in a way that gives her an answer she's happy with. It is virtually impossible to be objective when doing a reading for oneself, and even harder to accept anything unpleasant the cards reveal, and the temptation to put a positive spin on it is simply too great.

A fairly common mistake I still allow myself to make at times is that when I get an answer I don’t like I draw another card, or do a whole new reading, telling myself that the question must not have been worded precisely enough. Now, this is a BIG no-no! There can only be one reading per query, and therefore it is wisest to take the time to formulate it correctly before starting. If we get into asking the same regurgitated question multiple times, all that will happen is that we get confused and distressed, and from that point on there will be absolutely no way to get a clear answer.

In time every fortune teller will develop her unique method for conducting readings, and her personalized way of seeing card meanings and interrelations. It is okay to experiment until this perfect, individualized system is formulated. However, once it has been, the fortune teller should always stick to it! Consistency is essential.

If you ask me what my favourites are, I will definitely tell that among the many fortune-telling decks it is Lenormand and Gypsy. Come to think of the journey of self-discovery, it is these two decks which help me to understand and predict the future.

Now the point raised by many is that how accurately can the cards predict the future? My answer to that will be that if a person is a skilled reader, much can be known about the many aspects of someone’s life. However, it is difficult to say that all everything will match. Can a tarot card actually help a person? The answer to this is yes. With a good reading, you can have answers to many questions that are lurking within your mind. In fact, the tarot cards look deep inside a man’s inside and answer questions regarding the career, love life and family. With tarot cards, it is possible to change the course of your future if you ask the right questions. After a tarot card reading session, many people have said that they have discovered their hidden fears, some have recognized their hidden talents, and some had the life-changing experience where they have been spiritually elevated.

Gypsy cards are known for their chatty character. But apart from being perfect aides to fortune telling, they are also used to map the positive-negative energy dynamics in the life of a person. So, if you are down and feel that your life is clogged with negative energy, it is time to take help of these cards. And as they say, when you get a better perspective, life can indeed change.

What do the cards reveal about our love relationships – is it always true that it takes two to tango?

Years ago when my country’s economy was in far better shape, love used to be the dominant subject of readings. Nowadays, the number of requests dealing with carrier and finances has increased quite a bit. However, love still holds first place!

The success of a relationship depends on a multitude of things, among which, obviously a very important one is the how the querent’s sweetheart feels. Luckily for us, the cards can easily shed light on this. What is nearly impossible to predict is the duration of a relationship – will it last for five years, ten years or a lifetime? I would caution everyone against trying to forecast this using the cards, for their purpose is not such. What the different combinations within layouts can tell us, tough is whether a certain person’s appearance in our life has been fated; a meeting we could not avoid, even if it is destined to end unfavorably.

For instance, Constancy drawn next to the Visit card often signals that although a relationship will be a short-term one, it was meant to happen. 

However, Loyalty and Marriage falling next to the Constancy card promise a long-term bond.

The card of Constancy represents emotional balance, stability, but also distant future. 
The spirit animal of the card of constancy is the eagle. Eagles have excellent vision, they are divine and have the power of a great spirits. 

The message: Learn how to see the big picture and don't be distracted by details.

Searching for your other half

Finally, the second half of the year begins with July arriving. She sighed with relief, it has been a difficult one and a half year.

She put all the bad things behind, mostly the annoying friends, her Facebook profile was spotlessly clean. She finished her long-distance relationship of six years, which should have been closed exactly five years and ten months ago, but letting go had never been her forte. She had determined that things will change now; that she will be the in-charge of her life.

She had never had high expectations. Just small things as believing in evolution, for example. Not kidding. Since her friend’s ex didn’t believe in that, she quickly wrote this on her “pros and cons list” as a con. Beer belly became a pro, (something for something) and she lowered the age limit from 40 to 35. Just in case.  

Her mother had frequently told her “if one door closes, another opens,” and “ask and it will be given.” she had now started to believe in it, so she positively went on her way and hoped the charming prince will appear. Because she had always believed everyone has a soul mate.

Then one month passed. Then two which turned into six and then eight months. This has now turned into a year, and she started to feel exasperated. She hoped she hadn't passed by him. 

She went to an astrologer who confirmed that her planet (no longer remembers its name) in September will enter in the house, she thinks was the seventh (perhaps) which will bring the expected relationship. This is going to be the one. Relieved, she felt happy and started to get her hopes up. Although she did not understand half of what was said, and she wasn’t convinced about it, but this time must be true she felt this would be so.

Supposedly there will be such planet conjunctions, as they were when she met her previous boyfriends. She really hoped he won't be strikingly similar to them because though she was on good terms with them, there is a reason why they call them exes. So, it will be a turning point for destiny.

Well, if you can relate to this story, here is a layout that shows if you find your partner within a year.

From the major Arcana we pull seven cards and lay them in a row. Women should look for the Emperor the men for the Empress. If  the indicator card is there, then you will find your partner within a year, if not, then you still have to wait for him/her. 
As you can see the Emperor is there, but still 10-11 more months to arrive, since it lies at the end of the row. The Devil and Moon refer to seduction and overflown emotions, there will be someone who will be coming with bad intent. Although she will have some possibilities here and there, neither will be the real one, the tower shows exactly that.

From small Arcana we can cover those cards what we are most curious about. On the Lovers card the Eight of swords means lack of clarity, perhaps some bad memories from the past (Nine of swords).
Then there is an encounter with the past (Six of the pots), which will probably be a new start.

There were only two choices now

It was Sunday afternoon and she was sitting quietly at home. One of those rare moments when she was not trekking somewhere or hanging around on one of the tropical islands. Her teenage son just came out from his room, where he went in on Friday. He just showed up to fix the router, because the Internet had gone for two long minutes. He murmured something then went back to play with his buddies on the computer.

In the meantime, she thought about her life. Last year it was a big turning point for her when she had decided to start a new life. Also, more and more of her female clients complained about difficulties managing family and work, and middle-aged men have disappeared. Yes, indeed. Where are they? She was convinced, that no baby boys were born in the 70s. The few remaining guys are all Digital nomads on Thai beaches. At least she has seen them there. Oh, whatever.

Recently, she had also become one of them. If not completely then at least partly. She had heard about free spirit, spiritual journey, and all that stuff. She convinced herself, that she can do it as well, what's so hard in it? And if it is spirituality, she hoped to close a big circle and to close her karma. It is a big trend now whatever karma means. She had no idea about it either but she was very much ready to leave all her past behind. Therefore, she quickly bought an ultra-lightweight laptop and started off.

The true fact was she definitely enjoyed her life to the fullest. She cannot complain about it as she feels great.

A couple of weeks ago, however, she got a job offer similar to what she used to do, an illustrious well- known organization but in a different country, far far away. And now the big dilemma is whether to take it or not.

This layout gives a great answer to that.

On the right, we put the indicator card, the judge since we talk about job, then we pull six cards and we put them in a vertical line. The top three show us what will happen if we change, the bottom three cards will talk about what happened if we continue in our current life.

According to this, if everything stays as before, the constancy, marriage, luck, cards show security, stable job and a very good financial situation which means long-term money. The future option is money, love, and priest showing that there would be also money, perhaps not as much as now, but this work would be good only if she could do it from heart, lucky if you would do it from heart to soul. It can be seen that both paths are equally good. The solution that the right card indicates will be a man, and as the lover card has come out, it is likely to indicate a future relationship, and the travel card confirms that.

What about Sara?

Sara was eagerly waiting for the Wednesday’s evening brunch. It had become a tradition wherein all the coaching buddies went to eat or drink together. She loved to take part in these, because in most cases, the guys were always willing to pay for her food or drinks.

But it wasn’t always like this for Sara. A few years ago, she lacked the self-confidence she had now because of a few extra pounds of weights. But since she has gone to the local club, which was mostly visited by fortyish and fiftyish amateur athletes, she really liked the change in her shape. She was always thrilled by the special attention of men. Giggling throughout the training came naturally to her, which she enjoyed more than the workout. Although she had just reached the age of 38, but everyone was convinced, that she could deny half of her age. Since she heard that „forty is the new twenty”, she really wanted to believe in it.

However, she was starting to get concerned about her age. Not because she was growing old, but because she really enjoyed living a carefree life, and did not want to commit yet. What if there is an even better, more handsome, or even richer man out there and she is ....... and she is engaged???

Therefore, although she accepted the courtship of a 42-year-old unmarried training buddy, who also just wanted a loose relationship, they kept it a secret relationship, that no one knew about.  Let's say courageously, she has been just a "lover” for him. But she was fine with it. This gave her the liberty to flirt with handsome gentlemen around her.

So, Sara continued to enjoy her single life and sometimes wondered what she wanted from this training buddy, because if you truly think about it, he was only forty two year old and not fifty, like the men around her. But still… Is he what Sara is looking for?

Amidst choosing between guys, one day Sara realized that her knight in shining armour was stolen by his pretty neighbour. He left her wondering and asking, what the hell happened? After thinking a lot about it, Sara reached to the conclusion that although Sara was blonde and green-eyed, which is a great advantage in her country, what attracted his training buddy was the money of the neighbour lady.

It left a deep impact on Sara. Astonished, she asked herself „What now?”

And this is the question for the cards, What about Sara now?

The child on the indicator card shows childish thinking and behavior, the same as the card lies below.  

In the past, we had seen that there was a loose relationship, the little money refers to the weak energies. The hope card in her thought means it is difficult for her to let things go.

The fate in the near future is the thief card, which shows a hostile situation of which she has no clarity. The jealousy card shows her inner fears and the outcome which will result in a loss for her.
