I went to
Greece few years ago, and I couldn't stand
visiting Delphi.
Once these
prophecies defined the
decisions of an entire nation. One of the most famous visitor of the
oracle of Delphi was Alexander the Great. Who would have thought that even that
time they went on vacation, we don’t know the purpose, but from November to
February Pythia did not offer prophecies. This was a huge problem since Greeks had never got involved
in any battle before asking the Gods`
advice. In November, before the Persian campaign Alexander the Great marched
into Delphi with 40 000 soldiers, but he was sent away by the guard saying
“come back in February”!
He
desperately needed the God’s blessings, otherwise he wouldn't have been
followed by his soldiers, so having stormed into the temple grabbed the
priestess by her hair demanding the prediction.
“You're
invincible!” shouted the poor intimidated Pythia, most probably, she referred to his
aggressiveness, but Alexander took it as a victory over the Persian army.
Well, this
prediction was proved to be true.
